Rachel Shackelford Orange
A little about me… I am a haole
girl that was lucky enough to have been raised on the Big Island of Hawai‘i.
My interests are fairly diverse, but my primary love is for the ocean and
the sports and creatures that are associated with it.
I first became interested in studying marine science while going to high school at HPA.
After high school I moved to the island
of Oahu to go to college at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where I completed
a B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in
marine
studies in the spring of '98. I have been an active member of the Marine
Option Program and have participated in a number of marine related projects
and activities (see my resume). I started working for
Dr.
Jim Cowen in the department of Oceanography my freshman year and had the
opportunity to join him on a number of research cruises. After working
in Jim's lab for about 3 years, I did a summer project through the REU (research
experience for undergraduates) program under the supervision of Dr. Dave Karl
in the marine microbiology lab
and then ended up working for him during my last year as an undergrad doing
a senior thesis project for the honors program. I completed a Master's
degree in the department of oceanography which is a part of the School of Ocean
and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST).
For a few years, my second home was a really cool little coffee
shop called
.
It was a nice place for surfing the web, trying to study, and talking to cool
people.... But now it is no more. :( Before I stopped working there Mark instigated
"theme night" -- we had a lot of fun with it! So I have
been forced to make my own coffee and work in my office.
In July 2005 I got married to
Raymon Orange. We occasionally
run with the Aloha
Hash House Harriers -- a "drinking group, with a running problem." We
both paddle with the Waikiki Beachboys
Canoe Club and spend any remaining time working on our house.
